備份檔案可以很簡單、也可以很吃力，plasticsfuture 這篇文章比較了 Mac OS X 上各家的檔案備份 (backup) 或磁碟複製 (cloning) 工具。其實各個備份工具的功能不一，但這並非作者比較的重點，在這篇測試軟體的文章中，他僅著重在基本的拷貝檔案方面，而且是指 "確實無誤、滴水不漏地拷貝檔案"。
A backup tool needs to be able to copy files faithfully for a successful restore in case desaster has struck. The surprising conclusion of my investigation is that almost all Macintosh Backup tools fail at their most basic task, the faithful copying of files.
其中所測試的所有工具皆可完成拷貝檔案內容的的任務 (包含 resource forks)，不過作者也提到若把檔案的 matadata 也納入考量 (如檔案的修改日期、類型、製作者、Unix 權限...等等)，那麼在測試的表現上就有許多差異了...評比分成四個等級，作者也分別列出了各個工具的問題。
這篇篇幅頗長的文章比較了 17 個不同的備份或磁碟複製工具，最後作者推薦的是 SuperDuper... 有興趣的朋友可以前往瞧瞧！
For backup purposes, use SuperDuper, or, if you can tolerate the loss of your creation dates, Apple’s Disk Utility/asr (in device copy mode, it doesn’t have this restriction).

現在的問題在於，我有時候會使用辦公室的桌機去異動這些資料，但是也會使用iBook在外接硬碟上異動這些資料。 我目前都是只能用手動的方式去複製外接硬碟與檔案伺服器的相異資料，我想要的備份軟體比較類似 sync 這種東西，可以自動比對資料的修改時間，如果有新資料就覆蓋過去。 不過目前好像都是整顆HD直接備份的.....

With Backup, you can create scheduled backup in full backup of incremental backups, so you can save time and storage space. Backup also allows you to revert data back to certain date.

http://www.decimus.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=514 簡單的說，他覺得會使用metadata的人少之又少，小於百分之一。不過他也說了，下一版的synk中將加入支援metadata的備份功能。 我的好奇是，一般的使用者真的會用到metadata嗎？
