Apple 首次介紹 iOS 5 是在今年六月的 WWDC 上，這次的 Let’s Talk iPhone 發表會提到了新的通知中心、iMessage 在 iOS 和裝置之間的傳訊服務、Reminders 提醒事項應用程式、整合 Twitter、整理和管理 iOS 雜誌訂閱的 Newsstand 書報攤應用程式、現有程式 (如相機、Safari、郵件) 的各項更新，以及無線設定與同步的功能等等。
